Invisible Boy by Shel Silverstein
And here we see the invisible boy
In his lovely invisible house,
Feeding a piece of invisible cheese
To a little invisible mouse.
Oh, what a beautiful picture to see!
Will you draw an invisible picture for me?
I also love Shel Silverstein poems. He takes anything and turns it into a humorous poem. He is great to introduce to students because he writes a wide variety of poems on anything. I think one of the hardest thing about writing poems is what to write about. Well Silverstein shows you that it can be anything.
I picked this particular poem because it made me laugh so hard and allowed me to use my imagination. The picture i produced in my head made it all the better. A great teaching strategy with this is have the kids draw out what they picked when they read the poem. Also it is a great poem to help students write poems. The elements that Silverstein uses is sounds with the last word which rhymes with another last word. The alliteration that he uses is a consonance form because the "ouse" and "e" are the sounds that repeat and rhyme. He uses images in this particular poem but the reader produces the image. So every image should be different based on what that person takes from the poem. Silverstein is a great poet and i will have his collection in my classroom!!
