Write About A Radish
By: Karla Kuskin
Write about a radish
too many people write about the moon.
The night is black
the stars are small and high
the clock unwinds its ever-ticking tune
hills gleam dimly
distant nighthawks cry.
A radish rises in the waiting sky.

I chose this poem because it was so unique and funny. I really enjoy Karla Kuskin's poetry because she has some ridiculous things that she writes about, anywhere from a radish, mud, to a pigeon. I love it. I would place this poem in the nonsense verse category because a radish is representing the moon because too many people write about the moon. That is just silly and that is why I like her work so much. Karla uses the rhyme function in this poem by having the some of the words rhyme at the end of the stanzas. One thing that is fun about her poetry is that she usually has illustrations to go along with her poetry to emphasize the humor in her poems. I think she would be a great poet to introduce to a class because her poetry is fun and easy to read.
