Walk Two Moons is a good read. It grabbed my attention quickly, probably because I can somewhat relate. Sal is down to earth and introspective. She admits her fears and talks a little like my oldest son! Intermingled in her thoughts are observations of others that help her make sense of herself. Phoebe is too uptight and judgemental. She is honest, though! Hiding her feelings is not helping her at this point in the story. It's not a wonder that she can't see why her mom left. Her thoughts are mostly engrossed in herself, as most of ours are.The two girls are alike in their reactions to their mothers absenses according to Sal. And who wouldn't be angry and in denial?

I am thouroughly enjoying "Walk Two Moons." As I read this book I immediately think to one of my own students who had his mother leave him just several weeks ago. Due to Sal's mother leaving it seems she has had to grow up somewhat faster than most children. She is very mature for her age in her thinking process. Phoebe, although going through her mother leaving as well, is very different from Sal, but Sal has had more time to deal with what has taken place. Phoebe is very self absorbed. I think that goes back to her maturity level. Sal is constantly wondering if it was something she did to make her mother leave. Phoebe doesn't seem concerned with why she left, just where she is and if she is okay. Sal's family seems very different that Phoebe's family. Phoebe's family seems to be in some sort of chaos constantly. Sometimes silence is presence, but that can be a sign of instability for families. That would be the case for this family. I cannot wait to finish the book to find out if Sal reunites with her mom, and what has happened to Phoebe's mom. The book has kept me wondering the entire time, which indicates it is a great read.
