Instructional Strategies part 2- Dana Eudy

Think/Pair/Share
I use Think/Pair/Share with my class all the time. I am using it currently during our unit on Stone Fox. On the first day of reading we will complete two chapters. After completing the chapters, I will ask the students why the grandfather did not have the will to live and what they think Willy should do. Students will have two or three minutes to think individually. Next, I will pair students up and they will share their thoughts with their partner. After the partners have had three or four minutes to share, they will choose an “expert” to share with the class. Each expert will have about a minute to share the group’s thoughts. During this strategy, every student will have the chance to share their thoughts even if they do not want to share with the whole class.

Story Mapping
I am using Story Mapping with my fourth grade class while reading Grandfather’s Journey. I will start by reviewing the elements of a story. We will read Grandfather’s Journey as a class and students will read the story with a partner. After students have a good understanding of the story, they will complete a story star on their own. In the middle of the star students will write the theme of the story. In the five points students will write who, when, where, why, and how did it end. This will show me if my students understand the elements of this story.

Julie:

Dana, story mapping with a star visual sounds interesting. I like visuals and students seem to comprehend information better when that have in compartmentalized. I think I will try this with my first graders next week!

Jackie Jenkins:

Dana,

I really like think, pair share also. I use it with my kindergarteners when we are writing. I will have them think about an idea or topic and then share with a partner. They like it and it helps get the thoughts flowing.
