Instructional Strategy - SQ3R Lesson (Melissa Riley)

I'm intending to present a recent language arts lesson I did with fourth graders, using the SQ3R instructional strategy. Part of my school's reading curriculum involves OpenCourt, and when I teach a particular story from our textbooks, I usually make it a three to four day mini-unit that is typically taught and discussed Monday through Thursday with a test given on Friday.

The lesson I delivered involved the talltale of "McBroom and the Big Wind" by Sid Fleischman. I had students independently survey, or glance the text, and write their observations in the S column of their worksheet. At the same time, they asked questions they would like to have answered from the text. These questions were placed in the Q column. I then allowed students to partner up for partner reading, where they shared with each other what they noticed and the questions they had. They then read the text while answering their inquiries and taking other notes in the R column, which stands for reading. After reading, partner groups would then retell the text in the second R column, and finally, as a whole class, we discussed and reviewed the story for comprehension while students took notes of our review in the third R column. I then encouraged students to use their SQ3R worksheet as a study guide for our Friday reading test on the story.
