KWL Plus Strategy-Gloria Bowman

Students will be told they will be studying about Emperor penguins and that they will be reading an informational story titled, The Emperor’s Egg, by Martin Jenkins. They will also watch a National Geographic video clip online and the movie The March of the Penguins to learn some information about Emperor penguins. Before reading the story, a K-W-L chart entitled, Emperor Penguins, will be displayed on a Smart Board. Students will be assigned to a group and will discuss what they know about Emperor penguins and will then take turns offering statements they view as facts about them. Once their statements are recorded on the “K” part of the chart, they will be asked to discuss what they would like to know about Emperor penguins and decide on several questions they would like to have written on the “W” section of the K-W-L chart. Students will then read The Emperor’s Egg in their groups and will be asked to share what they learned. As the information is given, it is written on the “L” section of the chart. Any incorrect information given previously will be corrected. Students will then work in their groups to categorize the information. After the categories and the facts that relate to them are determined, they are recorded on another chart. From that chart, students are guided in a whole class setting to create a concept map on the Smart Board to bring all the information together.
