Benny B.

Daniel’s story about Benny B. reminded me of Vivian Paley’s book, A Child’s Work. In this book Paley discusses how children work through conflict going on in their lives, either directly or indirectly. She cites examples of Kindergarten students reenacting the 9-11 disaster, only in their version of the story everyone ends up ok and goes back home to their families. This shows how children even as old as Daniel, use stories to work through situations they are otherwise powerless in. Through stories, they control the situation and make everything work out “right”.

I think it is a shame, though, that Daniel doesn’t have the opportunity to showcase his many skills and talents within a school setting.

Zonnie seemed to have more positive experiences at school than Daniel. I wonder why this is so? I think it could possibly be the connection she has with her teachers through her interest in writing. I also wonder if it is more difficult for a Native American boy to ‘fit in’ around white boys than it is for Native American girls to ‘fit in’ with white girls.

Marcia,
I also questioned what would happen if a special teacher, such as music or arts teacher became involved with Daniel. Would that give him the connection and motivation to be more present when he is at school?
Why didn't his mom or dad have more to say about his lack of participation in school?

Amy Hardister:

Daniel didn't seem as apt to be involved in school. Teachers and fellow students have a huge impact on the comfort level of students. A special teacher who recognized Daniel's strengths could really help him develop his talent for story writing. It also makes me think about the importance of creating a safe zone in the classroom where every child's words and input is appreciated. It seemed as though Daniel felt more alienated than anything. He struggled with connecting with others in the classroom. I think this is a good reminder that as teachers it is important to make all students feel valuable within the classroom. When think about Zonnie, it seemed as though she was more connected with her reading teacher. She praised her in a way that made her feel comfortable. I thought though it was interesting that while Zonnie thought her language arts teacher didn't really read her journals, it allowed her to be more free in her journaling. It is sad that this teacher said she is "just there." I'm sure that the teacher felt regretful about this. It is sad when we as teachers don't connect.
