Caroline Walker - Buzz! Whiz! Bang! Using Comic Books to Teach Onomatopoeia

I chose this lesson plan because that is something my 3rd graders have been working on while reading, "Why Mosquitoes Buzz in People's Ears." Using comic books would be another idea to teach onomatopoeia, especially for struggling readers.

The children love looking for and finding onomatopoeia on their own and pointing them out to their classmates and teachers. Finding them in comics would add another element of, "This is fun," while some of them won't even realize they are working and not playing.

I love the timeline that lays out the plan for teachers. I am going to use this is my class and have passed it on to the regular classroom teachers. I changed the timeline o better fit the needs of my students. My students will love the fact they are using comics instead of doing "real reading." Sometimes you have to trick reluctant and struggling readers.
