The third lesson that I taught in my class based on the instructional strategies that I have learned is one based on the short story called "Fish Cheeks". Students will read this short story in their literature book and after we have finished the story we would use a strategy called story mapping. This is a visual way for students to understand the plot of the story and what takes place such as the exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, and resolution. I will then introduce the word imagery to the students and explain that this deals with the five senses. Students will go back in the text and identify the different types of imagery in the short story. Students will be placed in a group or with a partner and they will create a chart with the five different senses as headings. The students will cite several examples of each of the five imagery senses in their chart. At the end of the class, as an exit activity, students will use the strategy called vocabulary squares. I will give them an index card and they will divide it into four sections. In the first section they will write the word imagery. In the second section, they will create their own definition of imagery based on what they have learned from that day's lesson. In the third section, they will draw a visual representation, such as an ear or eye or hand or something. In the last section, they will give an example and they will use an example from the short story that read from the class earlier on. I will have them to make it very colorful and these could be used on a word wall or be given back to the students to keep in their notebook.
