Brett Houghton- introduction
My name is Brett and I am a Physical Education major. I chose to teach PE because I have always had a passion for sports no matter what sport it was. I wrestled for 17 years finishing up my career at App last year. I also played several sports in high school and almost every intramural sport at App. My dad is a history teacher and my sister is an ESL teacher so I have always wanted to teach and coach since I was really young. I hope to help students become physically active not only in high school but for the rest of their lives.
I am currently placed at Ashe County high school located just thirty minutes from Boone. It is a pretty small school compared to where I attended high school in Charlotte. I really enjoy it at Ashe. I could not ask for a better school, fellow teachers, or students. All three of my classes have been great thus far and I hope it continues on the same path until I leave for Ireland. I am also helping with the wrestling teams preseason workouts right now, which I also enjoy.
I chose to teach abroad because I love to travel. It is probably my favorite thing to do. I have been to 44 states and 9 countries thus far with Ireland being my tenth. My dad always took us all over the county when we were little, and took us to Europe twice when I was in high school. I absolutely loved it and have been wanting to go back ever since. I really enjoy seeing how other people live their lives, how their culture is different, and I love seeing new places. My sister studied abroad for a year in France and came back fluent in french. When I saw the opportunity to teach abroad I had to jump on it because I may never get an opportunity like this again.
