Lori Vestal Kidstations SD workshop

The staff development workshop that I am working on is based on the kidstation model from the book The Guided Reading Kidstation Model; making instruction meaningful for the whole class by E. Francine Guastello & Claire R. Lenz. This model can be modified to meet the needs for grades K-5, for classes up to 30 students. It is designed to give teachers a plan on how to work with a small group of students during reading group time while the others are working on independent work on their level. The appeal is that on the fifth day, the students get to present their work to the class, which encourages communication skills and gives students incentive to produce quality work because other peers will be looking at it. I plan on addressing how to form groups of students based on abilities or interests, what to put in the stations and how to make basal readers, trade books and leveled readers fit into the process. My intentions are to have a hands on session where I have the stations set up, (possibly with actual students) to give the teachers an idea of what the stations look like in action. I would like to have a follow up session with the teachers to get feedback on what worked for them and brainstorm solutions on how to tweak it so that they are successful in implementing this model into the classroom.
